Why is exfoliation necessary?
Exfoliation is a process where dead cells from the skin are removed. Why is this important?
Your skin does this naturally in a process called desquamation.
Desquamation is basically the way your skin naturally moves older skin cells to the surface to slough off and reveal new, fresh skin cells. These older cells often contain pollutants, toxins and microorganisms and need to be removed in order for healthy skin to take its place.
Similarlyproper exfoliation removes the barrier of dead skin cells clogging the skin, as well as daily grime and build up, to uncover fresh new cells below. This opens the way for skincare products to better penetrate into the skin and make them more effective.
Unfortunately, the natural desquamation process becomes less efficient as you age and therefore regular exfoliation is needed to leave your skin looking fresh and healthy.
There are both chemical exfoliants and physical exfoliants available to use although chemical exfoliation is known to be gentler on the skin. When it comes to chemical exfoliants, there are a variety of hydroxy acids and fruit enzymes to choose from.
While you can exfoliate many different ways depending on your skin sensitivity, we believe mild exfoliation done regularly using gentle face wash and serums that use a mix of hydroxy acids and a mix of gentle fruit acids is not only easy to incorporate for busy people but also quite effective.
Proper and regular exfoliation will give you a smoother, brighter appearance to your skin, as well as, increase skin barrier strength and open the way for new skin cells to absorb nutrients that are present in skincare products.
In fact, a clinical study published byClinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology, concluded that a skincare system that incorporates AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids such as glycolic and lactic acid) and vitamins (such as vitamins B, C and E) together will “significantly improve the biomechanical parameters of the skin including wrinkles and skin texture, as well as elasticity” (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4277239/).
How can I exfoliate my face safely?
(this is where we come in…)
Our Adult Anti-aging serum, the Exfoliating Elixir, contains AHAs like glycolic and lactic acid combined with gentle fruit acids that exfoliate dead skin cells on your face while allowing the incorporated vitamins and antioxidants to penetrate the skin barrier properly and effectively.
This improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, while improving the tone, texture and elasticity of the skin.
So grab an Exfoliating Elixir and gently work your way to glowing, bright, beautiful, youthful skin.
